Grandfield High School

Debra Taylor taught her Grandfield High School Ethics and Street Law classes by challenging her students to think outside their own experience, to look at a complex world with an open mind.

When she used a part of the play The Laramie Project to discuss hate crimes, a few parents complained, and ultimately Taylor was forced to resign.

But the problems didn’t end there. Those students who still supported her were denied their rights to free self expression, and members of NLG Oklahoma are working with students and parents to inform the school administration that such actions are not legal.

We are continuing to monitor the situation, and will provide further support and services as needed and requested.
